In Singapore when you hear of Sushi you’ll either think of a budget sushi shop like Sushi Express or you’d think of a high end Japanese Restaurant like Shinji by Kanesaka at Raffles Hotel. But over here in Japan, you won’t have to worry so much about the quality. Just about any casual Sushi branch will do it for you.
A good (and fairly well known) example would be SUSHIRO (スシロー), a branch of conveyor belt sushi eateries that has spread itself all around Japan, with various outlets in Fukuoka.
In here the quality is not only assured, but exceeds any inane touristy expectations you have of any foreign place. What’s really special is the way some of your orders may arrive. There is an electronic screen that you key your orders in and then the sushi will come on colour coded trays that only a specific table will receive. It’s a semi trust system that the entire restaurant tends to be in sync with. As your tray comes the machine will play some annoying music and you’ll take your food.
The prices are also amazingly reasonable. The standard prices of most of the sushi is 100¥ which is about S$1.10 in today’s conversion rate. The more “high end” sushi is 180¥ which is almost S$2, which still isn’t too bad.

The prices are as such for the sushi! Really reasonable, and we only spent a bit over S$20 for 3 people.
And guess what, the sushi is great, and I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

The most innovative of the day, Yakiniku (stir fried beef) sushi. It was a little salty but still added a special touch to our assortment.
So there we are, even the most budgeted outlets sell really good Sushi; the pictures do not augment the quality of the taste in any way, it all tasted great all the same, and nothing you’d find in any Sushi outlet back home could ever compare. So do give these inconspicuous Sushi branches a try if you ever hop down to Japan!
